Japan has taken a significant step in currency innovation by issuing its first new banknotes in two decades. These yen banknotes come with state-of-the-art anti-counterfeit features, designed to enhance security and thwart counterfeiters. Here are the key details:

  1. Denominations:
    • The new banknotes are available in denominations of 10,000 yen (approximately $61), 5,000 yen (approximately $30), and 1,000 yen (approximately $6).
    • These notes replace the older designs and mark a fresh chapter in Japan’s currency history.
  2. Anti-Counterfeit Technology:
    • The banknotes incorporate cutting-edge hologram technology with rotating 3D portraits.
    • This technology is a world-first, making Japan’s new banknotes stand out globally.
  3. Faces on the Notes:
    • The 10,000 yen bill features a portrait of Shibusawa Eiichi, known as the “father of Japanese capitalism.”
    • Other denominations also showcase notable figures, adding cultural significance.
  4. Historic Release:
    • Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda marked the release of these banknotes in a ceremony at the BOJ headquarters in Tokyo.
    • The words at the bottom of the notes read: “New Bank of Japan banknotes start being issued.”
