August 12th marks World Elephant Day, a global celebration aimed at raising awareness about the conservation and protection of elephants. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X to emphasize the significance of this day, highlighting the country’s commitment to ensuring a conducive habitat for these majestic creatures.

In his statement, PM Modi said, “World Elephant Day is an occasion to appreciate the wide range of community efforts to protect elephants. At the same time, we reaffirm our commitment to doing everything possible to ensure elephants get a conducive habitat where they can thrive.”

He further added, “For us in India, the elephant is linked to our culture and history, too. And it’s gladdening that over the last few years, their numbers have been on the rise.”

World Elephant Day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect elephant populations, threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. India, home to a significant portion of the world’s elephant population, has made notable strides in conservation efforts.

The country’s elephant conservation programs, including habitat preservation and anti-poaching initiatives, have contributed to the steady increase in elephant numbers. However, continued support and awareness are crucial to ensuring the long-term survival of these gentle giants.

As the world comes together to celebrate World Elephant Day, PM Modi’s statement serves as a rallying cry for renewed commitment to protecting these incredible animals and their habitats.
