New Delhi, October 16, 2024 – In a significant push towards responsible artificial intelligence, the IndiaAI Mission, under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, has selected eight innovative projects in response to an Expression of Interest (EoI) under its Safe and Trusted AI Pillar. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to embedding robust safeguards into AI technologies to ensure they are developed and deployed ethically and transparently.

The selected projects span a variety of critical themes essential for the ethical advancement of AI. These include:
  • Machine Unlearning: Techniques to remove learned knowledge from AI models to protect privacy and intellectual property.
  • Synthetic Data Generation: Creating artificial data to train AI models without compromising real-world privacy.
  • AI Bias Mitigation: Methods to identify and reduce biases in AI algorithms to ensure fair outcomes.
  • Ethical AI Frameworks: Development of guidelines and frameworks to govern AI creation and usage.
  • Privacy-Enhancing Tools: Tools designed to protect user data privacy during AI interactions.
  • Explainable AI: Technologies that help in understanding how AI models make decisions.
  • AI Governance Testing: Processes to test AI systems against governance and ethical standards.
  • Algorithm Auditing Tools: Software to audit AI algorithms for compliance and ethical considerations.
The Ministry reported an overwhelming response to the EoI, with over 2,000 proposals submitted from a diverse group including academic institutions, startups, research bodies, and civil society organizations. After a meticulous technical evaluation, the eight projects were chosen for their potential to significantly contribute to the responsible use of AI.
This selection underscores India’s ambition to lead in the ethical AI space, fostering an environment where AI technologies can be trusted by citizens and businesses alike. The Ministry of Electronics and IT aims to set a global benchmark with these projects, promoting a culture where AI not only drives innovation but does so with integrity and respect for human rights and privacy.
