Tragic Fall Claims Life of Labour from Bihar Near Shimla’s Indira Market
NDRF’s Four-Hour Rescue Operation
Shimla, October 1, 2024 – An unfortunate incident unfolded Monday evening near Indira Market in Shimla district, where a labour from bihar named Joginder Paswan, aged 34, lost his life after falling into a deep ditch from the National Highway. The tragic accident occurred when Paswan, reportedly sitting on the W-beam railing, lost his balance and fell backwards.
A young girl from a nearby residence witnessed the fall and promptly alerted the authorities. The incident site, located near Rampur on the banks of the Sutlej River, posed significant challenges for rescue due to the darkness and the depth of the ditch.

Upon receiving the report, local police, home guards, and the fire brigade rushed to the scene. Given the complexity of the terrain, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was summoned. The NDRF team, using ropes, descended the rocky slope after about four hours of arduous work, successfully retrieving Paswan’s body.
Joginder Paswan hailed from Saharsa, Bihar, and was employed by a construction contractor in Rampur. He lived with his elder brother and other relatives. On Monday, he had not gone to work, a routine day that tragically turned grave. Paswan leaves behind a family of six including his wife, five daughters, and a young son.
The police have taken custody of the body, which was sent to the mortuary at Mahatma Gandhi Medical Service Complex in Kheneri for further procedures. This incident underscores the occupational hazards faced by migrant workers like Paswan, who often work in precarious conditions away from home.
Conclusion: This heart-wrenching event serves as a grim reminder of the need for better safety measures and awareness for those working in potentially hazardous environments, especially along high-risk areas like highways. As the community mourns, there calls for enhanced support systems and safety protocols for labourers to prevent such tragedies in the future.
