In a recent social media post, Subramanian Swamy sparked controversy by claiming that Rahul Gandhi holds British citizenship. Swamy alleged that Gandhi acquired British citizenship in 2003 and started a company called Backops Limited in London, rendering his Indian citizenship invalid.
Swamy shared an image of a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs, dated April 29, 2019, which addressed Gandhi’s alleged citizenship issue. The letter, signed by Director (Citizenship) B.C. Joshi, requested Gandhi to clarify his nationality status within a fortnight.
Swamy questioned why PM Modi and Home Minister Shah are protecting Gandhi, threatening to file a case against them if they continue to do so. This accusation has ignited a new controversy, raising questions about Gandhi’s citizenship and the government’s response to the allegations.
Rahul Gandhi was born in India and has always been an Indian citizen. His family has made significant sacrifices for our country.
Even if your claims about his past citizenship were true, the political landscape has changed, and Rahul's role in India's future is more vital now…

In response to Swamy’s statement, a ‘X’ user named SreeVaradan defended Rahul Gandhi, stating, “Rahul Gandhi was born in India and has always been an Indian citizen. His family has made significant sacrifices for our country. Even if your claims about his past citizenship were true, the political landscape has changed, and Rahul’s role in India’s future is more vital now than ever before.”
